Reserves edge to victory over Cloughaneely

Senior Reserve Division 2
21 April 2017
Aodh Ruadh 1-8
Cloughaneely 2-4
Father Tierney Park

The reserves had a strong squad available for their match at Father Tierney Park on Friday evening. But despite taking a commanding six point lead in at the interval, the second half was to be a nail-bitter to the end as Aodh Ruadh eventually scraped through with a narrow hard fought one point victory.

Frees from Dylan Gallagher and Dermot Slevin settled the hosts into the game, before a fine turn of his man by Oisin Rooney left him through on goal to bury past the keeper and open an early five point lead. Another Gallagher free and a neat score from corner back Cian McGloin stretched that advantage to seven points.

The visitors carried threat up front throughout and had exceptional pace in the forward line and but for a superb Karl O’Brien save they would have had a goal back midway through the half. Slevin added his second free before Cloughaneely eventually got their first scores on the board on the 25th and 28th minute, leaving the half-time score at 1-5 to 0-2.

Cáelán Drummond got the first score after the restart, but as some complacency crept in Cloughaneely responded with a goal and a point to leave just a score in it midway through the half. The visitors at this stage had the momentum and with 22 minutes played were awarded a penalty which O’Brien was unlucky not to keep out after getting down low to the corner of goal. Level pegging at 1-6 to 2-3 this was anyone's game as it entered the final stages. Another Gallagher free edged Aodh Ruadh back in front, but that was cancelled out by the visitors netminder who had swapped goals for an outfield berth up front.

But as the game headed into added time, a brilliant sweeping move was clinically finished off by Gallagher to seal just the second win from five in this campaign to much relief for the Ernesiders.

There was great energy from the half back line of Lynch, Drummond and Gillespie, whilst David Finnerty worked tirelessly throughout the match. But the last word must go to Dylan Gallagher who bagged four points including the match winner deep in added time to seal the deal.
