Second win in Ulster Senior League for Aodh Ruadh

22 April 2006
Senior Club Ulster League Competition - Section 3A
Aodh Ruadh 4-11
Na Magha (Derry) 3-9

In a very fast flowing and high scoring match, despite going in as underdogs, Aodh Ruadh were eventual winners after surviving the final ten minutes of pressure when Na Magha were in search of two goals to win the match. Man of the match was Johnny Dolan (centre field) who's terrific level of fitness and general workrate dominated the centrefield area. Na Magha were favourites to win after comprehensively beating Aodh Ruadh in a challenge match earlier in the year.

Aodh Ruadh led from the start, although some excellent points from the Derry half-forward and also the corner forward positions kept the pressure on and it was lucky that they were content with points rather than goals. Poor goal keeping was evident on both sides but particularly on the Na Magha side, where a puck out to the Aodh Ruadh full forward (Anthony Coughlin) on the 21 yard line was easily finished to the back of the net. Likewise, a high dropping but catchable ball was missed by the Aodh Ruadh keeper John Rooney. Anthony Coughlin's first well taken goal kept Aodh Ruadh ahead leading on a scoreling of 2-5 to 0-7 at half-time.

Aodh Ruadh got two goals and some fine points on the resumption of play but faded badly in the final ten minutes when Na Magha got two goals and two points. Best for Aodh Ruadh were Peter Horan who improved after a poor first 20 minutes to dominate his marker (a current Co. Derry senior hurler) and the two minor players Chris Kilgannon and Gary Loughlin. Brian Patton also improved greatly, after his man, who was a very fast turning and nippy corner forward got some excellent points but was well marshalled in the end.
