McCumhaill's ease home against Ernesiders

Senior Hurling Championship Section "A"
McCumhaills 2-11
Aodh Ruadh 1-04
Dennis Doherty reports

In a very poor performance Aodh Ruadh went down to a well drilled and sharper Ballybofey team. The tough competitive first half was finished with an excellent goal by Mickey Bowering - taken with 8 minutes to go to be followed by a point by Anthony Coughlan ('Waddle'). The expected revival of Aodh Ruadh's fortunes did not arrive in the second half with McCumhaill's scoring some excellent points from the middle of the park. With the Ballyshannon midfield not performing at all well, it was these points that effectively finished the game. Indeed it was their ability to use the space and score these points that was the main difference between the teams.

An unfortunate goal 10 minutes before the end allowed Ballybofey some breathing space and they ended well in front. The goal should have been disallowed due to Aidan Begley and Dennis Doherty being blatently fouled, but nevertheless it was awarded. As it transpired the goal didn't matter much in the final analysis. The Aodh Ruadh hurlers were hampered by their midfield partnership being virtually absent, although the injured J. Dolan did play at full forward. David Downey was away on holidays and their most influential player, Johnny Dolan, had a pulled hamstring. Best for Aodh Ruadh was Chris Kilgannon and Mickey Bowering and the entire fullback line (including the A. Bowering (goalkeeper) who was under tremendous pressure all through the match).

The next championship match will be against Setanta and it will most likely be an even tougher proposition!
