Aodh Ruadh relegation fears deepen

Senior Football Division 1A
2 September 2007
Glenfin 2-17
Aodh Ruadh 3-05
Sean Perry reports from Pairc Ghleann Fhinne.

Aodh Ruadh's relegation woes increased with a nine point drubbing at the hands of an understrength Glenfin side in the Finn Valley on Sunday afternoon.

With the sides having experienced contrasting fortunes in the club championship a week earlier, league points were vital at the weekend with the Ballyshannon club holding up division 1A and Glenfin stuck second from bottom.

Daniel McGlynn had the ball in the back of the visitor's net as early as the first minute but Aodh Ruadh regrouped and put together a few decent moves of their own. Barry Mulligan raised a green flag beating stand-in keeper, Gary Dorrian before Michael Ward converted a penalty to put the Ballyshannon men a point up.

Even without injured county duo, Stephen McDermott and Frank McGlynn, other fringe players were anxious to impress the Glenfin management with the county semi-final against St Eunans looming on Saturday.

Ciaran Moy was accuracy personified and his cool kicking along with a Leigh Herron goal sent Glenfin in leading by 2-10 to 2-2 at the break.

With rain spilling down, the home side adapted best to the difficult conditions, Michael McGlynn and Mark McGinty surged forward at every opportunity as Aodh Ruadh minus Brian Roper through injury, Seamus Kane and Martin Gallagher floundered.

A third Aodh Ruadh goal from the boot of Niall McCready offered a glimmer of hope for his side but Glenfin were in no mood for a close finish. Late scores from the majestic Moy and last year's county minor full-forward, Gerard Ward squeezed the life from the Erne-siders and put the result beyond doubt.

The Glenfin are likely to be without Stephen McDermott for the weekend barring a miraculous recovery from a broken metatarsal, while hamstring victim, Frank McGlynn should feature for Seamus Ward's charges. Incidentally, Ward was also in charge the last time Glenfin featured in county semi-final in 1993 when they lost to Kilcar.
