Aodh Ruadh qualify for play-off

Senior Football Division 3
10 November 2014
Aodh Ruadh 2-13
Naomh Bríd 0-9
Peter Campbell reports from Father Tierney Park.

A fine first half performance was enough to see Aodh Ruadh defeat Naomh Bríd 2-13 to 0-9 to conclude their division three season on 26 points. A win for Naomh Columba in the last round league games saw them finish as league champions with 27 points. But a draw between Naomh Colmcille and Milford meant they finished on 25 points and so Aodh Ruadh can now look forward to a promotion / relegation play-off against Glenfin.

Aodh Ruadh led by 2-8 to 0-6 at the break with the decisive move coming in the final eight minutes of the half, when they added a second goal against an understrength Naomh Bríd.

They started very well and led by 1-5 to 0-1 after 18 minutes. David McGurrin, as usual, was to the fore but the goal was the highlight of the opening quarter, Barry Mulligan taking the ball on the run, turning and blasting to the corner of the Naomh Bríd net on 14 minutes.

The second goal from McGurrin on 26 minutes gave Aodh Ruadh a great cushion and despite some good points from David Walsh, the result was more or less decided by the break.

The second half saw Kerry Ryan dominate the game from midfield, spraying passes like a veteran while young Philip Patton was showing really well and he finished the game with a personal tally of 0-6.

David McGurrin retired at half-time with a shoulder injury, while Niall Harley had replaced James O'Donnell after just five minutes and made a useful contribution.
