Reserves chalk up first victory

Senior Reserve Division 3
9 April 2016
Aodh Ruadh 4-3
Fanad Gaels 0-7
David McLoone reports from Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

Aodh Ruadh reserves picked up their first win of the season at home to Buncrana with the match played at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. It was the visitors who started the better, getting the first two points of the day. However the reserves had an ideal response with goals from JJ Cassidy and Ryan Granaghan putting them in the driving seat. Buncrana managed another three points during the half, but a third Aodh Ruadh goal this time from Niall Thomas saw the visitors comfortably leading at the break on a remarkable scoreline of 3-0 to 0-5.

Team manager Anthony 'Waddle' Coughlin got the hosts first point of the day shortly after the restart. The visitors pulled two points back but that was to be the end of the scoring for them. A further point from Waddle, this time a nicely placed left footer, and a free from the never to retire Val Murray, kept the Erne men well in front. Niall Thomas put the icing on the cake with his second goal, this time collecting a rebound off the bar following a Kerry Ryan blazer, to stroke the ball into the empty net.

The reserves enjoyed having a strong squad out, with more subs togged than were able to get on. Mickey Dolan, Kieran Keown and Kerry Ryan added some steel through the spine of the team, while Jason Granaghan and PJ Gillespie linked play up well between the half backs and half forwards. Daniel Warnock and Oisin Kerr can both be happy with their work after they came on in the second half, each being very solid and comfortable on the ball. All in all a very satisfactory start at home to the 2016 campaign.
