Honours even in reserve clash

Senior Reserve Division 3
22 May 2016
Aodh Ruadh 0-8
Fanad Gaels 1-5
David McLoone reports from Father Tierney Park.

The reserves made hard work of taking a share of the spoils against a decent Fanad side at Father Tierney Park and not for the first time this season were left to rue missed chances from start to finish. Christopher 'Spanny' Goan opened the scoring with a nicely taken left footer from outside the 21. That was cancelled out before Aiden Murray restored the lead from a dead ball.

Fanad responded again with a point and quickly followed that with a goal, with all the damage being done by the Gaels centre forward who had 1-2 to his name by the 18th minute. Rory Cullen then notched up the hosts third point, but another pair of Fanad points stretched their lead to 1-4 to 0-3. Aiden Murray added Aodh Ruadhs fourth score of the half with a point from play just before the break to leave a goal between the sides.

Having had six wides during the first half Aodh Ruadh were confident the gap could be closed and were much more determined in the second half and managed to keep the visitors to just a single point. A fine point from Barry Mulligan followed by two frees from Murray drew the sides level midway through the half. Niall Thomas then saw his shot on goal saved by the keeper when he opted for power over placement.

The single point Fanad scored restored their lead and it took a late Baz Mulligan free to pull the sides level again. With four wides in the second half and three attempts dropping short into the keepers hand the hosts certainly should have done enough to win the game, but in the end had to make do with their point.

Best for Aodh Ruadh were Brian Dorrian at full back and Cian Dolan at half back, whilst Darren Gethins was strong in midfield and Aiden Murray clinical from placed ball.
