Saint Joseph's Ballyshannon/Bundoran: A breed apart

Saint Joseph's (Ballyshannon-Bundoran) were County Senior Football Champions on seven occasions - 1965, 1968, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976. It could be said, therefore, that the Dr. Maguire Cup has come to Ballyshannon on 19 occasions.

While they may have been the envy of club teams throughout the county, the famous Saint Joseph's team of Ballyshannon/Bundoran brought footballing to new heights in the period they spent together. They were without doubt, the greatest team of their generation in the northwest.

Having already picked up the Donegal Senior Championships in 1965, 1968 and 1970 and taking the runners up spot in 1967 and 1969, the two year final gap till 1973 must have been enormous for this illustrious and exceptionally talented bunch of footballers.

As the record books show, they were indeed a breed apart with 1973 heralding a fine blend of familiar and new faces, and went on to take four titles on the trot, emulating the famous Gaoth Dobhair side of the 1940's, before they finally split in 1977.
