~ BIG BAD INTERACTIVE FUN QUIZ ~
Many thanks to all who supported the Big Bad Interactive YouTube fun quiz on Thursday, 29th December, in aid Aodh Ruadh Bord na nÓg. There was a great turn-out with 24 tables taking part and we raised €1,100. It was a great night of fun and craic. It was particularly heartening to see and talk to the many club members back from foreign climes who showed their support on the night. Thanks to Bord na nÓg chair man Shane Toolan who did a great job as quiz master. Thanks to Catherine McKee and Betty McIntyre who marked and Brian Drummond, Paddy Kelly, Sylvester Maguire and Terence McShea who clocked up the miles collecting sheets and selling the raffle. Thanks also to all who sponsored prizes and Dicey Reilly's for hosting the night, especially Brendan for all his help and assistance. We have a few pictures from the evening up.

A few further points to note.

  • Only fully paid up members will be eligible for the draw for tickets to the football and hurling All Ireland finals.

A late rally of points from CJ McGourty helped Jordanstown to a surprise win over the Ulster champions in O'Donnell park last Sunday. Our own Peter Boyle was between the sticks for the homesters and gave his accustomed polished performance. We have some pictures from the match.

~ HURLING ~
Bon Voyage and best wishes to Peter Horan who heads for Perth this week. Peter was a great worker for Aodh Ruadh over the last few years. A fine player, he was also a referee and helped out in many fund-raising events for the club. But it was as an underage hurling coach that Peter did Trojan work. He coached teams to county titles at under 14 and under 16 and also led Aodh Ruadh under 14s to their first Donegal Féile in 2010 and to a great performance in the National Feile in Clare. He was also involved in county management for the last two years and along with all these commitments he still found time to play county hurling for Donegal and was part of the historic county squad that won the Lory Meagher title this year. Unfortunately like so many young people in the current economic climate he has to head Down Under for employment we wish him well and thank him for his hard work over the years.

The following underage management appointments were confirmed at a recent Juvenile Hurling meeting:
Minor: Aidan Begley (manager) assisted by David Downey.
Under 16: John Rooney (manager) assisted by Paul Sheridan.

In anticipation of an earlier start to the season than usual Aodh Ruadh's under 14s are being put through their paces at Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh by Barry Ward. We have some shots of the lads in action. Can you spot the county champions in the making yet?

~ HURLING ~
Colaiste Cholmcille lost a very exciting under 15 and a half Ulster final on Monday in the mid Ulster Sports Arena in Cookstown against Abbey CBS, Newry. Despite conceding two early goals to the physically stronger Newry team who were selecting players from six clubs, Colaiste Cholmcille never gave up and slowly clawed their way back into the game. All the Colaiste panel hurl with Aodh Ruadh, they showed great heart and determination to match the Down men, but in the end the concession of the two early goals left them with a mountain to climb. The young Colaiste team, 10 of whom are underage next year, fought to the bitter end, and can be very proud of the part they played in a great game of hurling which was played in a very sporting manner. The greater fitness and sharpness of the Newry men saw them claim the Ulster title on a 4-5 to 1-5 score line. The lads were a credit to their school and club and we thank Colaiste Cholmcille and Mr Conlan for promoting hurling in the school.

We thank all the community who are helping us raise much needed funds for Aodh Ruadh and also helping to tidy up the local area and protect the environment. On Saturday last two welcome additions were added to the list of supporters of this campaign. Liam Gilmartin of the Wellington Bar, Kinlough and Transition Year, Colaiste Cholmcille, Ballyshannon both of whom are giving very welcome support to our project. So join our recycling campaign and remember every can helps. Our under 16s had an exceptional run last year, winning the Southern Divisional league and championship, and crowned the season with a first county title at this grade since 1997. Those achievements were recognised in a medal presentation in Dicey Reilly's function room last Saturday. Team manager Shane Ward was compere as Donegal stars David Walsh and our own Peter Boyle were on hand to present the medals. David gave a short speech to the team afterwards urging them to continue to work at their game and target a place in the Donegal squad in years to come as a goal. Darren Gethins got the player of the year award, an accolade all the more prestigious as it was voted for by the team. Many thanks to all the parents who turned up and Dicey Reilly's for hosting the event. We have pictures from the evening.

~ LADIES ~
Donegal, a much weakened force since last year due emigration and departures, were beaten by 11 points by All-Ireland champions Cork on their NFL visit to Ballyshannon. The score line is deceptive as the game was far from one way traffic. Donegal passed up two clear goal opportunities in the first half and put a third off the cross bar in the second. Geraldine McLaughlin ran up 1-4 for the Tir Chonaill girls, but Cork's experience and goals proved the difference. The Cork manager, Eamonn Ryan, was very gracious after the game complimenting the club the venue and hospitality. We have pictures from the game.
