Football
Aodh Ruadh make their long-awaited return to senior championship on Sunday, 18th September. Four Masters will be the opposition for both our seniors and reserves. The seniors take on the Donegal town men in Tir Chonaill Park on Sunday week at 2pm, with that game being followed by the reserves at 3.30pm. We wish Barry Ward, Peter Gallagher and both squads all the very best in their preparations.

The minors took on one of the front runners for Division 1 honours last Friday. The Ballyshannon lads put in a mighty effort, but in the end MacCumhaill's just had too much for them and it finished MacCumhaill's 3-15 Aodh Ruadh 3-7. Aodh Ruadh put in a good performance and managed to stick with a talented Ballybofey outfit for much of the fixture. However, as time marched on MacCumhaill's were able to pull away with the help of two quick-fire goals. Best for the Ernesiders on the evening was Damian Weber, who never took a backward step all game. Meanwhile Pauric Daly and Shane Delahunty both also gave their absolute all and ensured that Aodh Ruadh garnered a respectable scoring return. Next up for the minors is a home fixture - at long last - this Friday. The opposition will be another tough prospect in the shape of Termon. Throw in for that game will be 6.30pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh.

The under 15 boys came up second best against Ardara in their league clash Wednesday with the final score 4-12 to 1-5 in favour of the homesters. The scoreline doesn't tell the full story of what was a positive display by the Ballyshannon lads. Corey Sheridan was in goals, and showed he is a man of many talents with an excellent outing. He had great cover in front of him too, with Jun Hui Lin dominating things at full back. Further up the pitch there was an excellent display by Killian McPhelim at corner forward. He didn't manage to get on the score sheet himself, but he was a very creative influence and set up a lot of Aodh Ruadh scores. Next up is a home fixture against Naomh Conaill on Wednesday in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh at 6.30pm.

It has been a busy few days for our under 12 squad. On Saturday they were on their travels to take on Glencar / Manorhamilton with 22 boys making the journey. Two tough physical games were played with very little between the teams at the end. On Monday evening we had our final Go Games blitz at home against Ardara. We had 26 players lining out in this fixture, again playing two matches. We played some brilliant football on both pitches, with some outstanding scores and performances. The under 12s train again on Thursday, 6pm, at the Coláiste Cholmcille field.

The under 9s had a busy weekend of action. On Friday evening they had a very enjoyable coaching session with Donegal star Ryan McHugh. We have some good pictures on the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page of that event. On Sunday 42 boys showed off their new found skills and came out on top in three very competitive games against Glenties. There is one remaining fixture scheduled at home against Ardara which down to take place Saturday, 18th September. Ahead of that we would like to extend our best wishes to the boys who are making their First Holy Communion this Saturday.

Our under 7s had a great evening at their last session of the year. Well done to the players on all their hard work all season, and also to the managers, coaches and mentors. It's great to see so many people invest their time and energy into these future stars.

Hurling
Aodh Ruadh enjoyed a facile win over a very weak MacCumhaill's outfit in round four of the Junior Championship. It was a good all-round team performance from Ballyshannon, but the lads are well aware tougher challenges are ahead. Check out aodhruadh.org for a gallery of pictures from the game. Next up for Aodh Ruadh is a local derby on Friday against Four Masters. Throw-in at Tir Chonaill Park is 7pm.

Our under 17s continued their great run with another victory, this time over the Burt in the Donegal league. Burt held a one point lead as the teams went in for the first water break and both sides performed well for the remainder of the second half. A few changes at half-time freshened our boys up, and left Ballyshannon in a strong position as the second half wore on. Some great performances across the team enabled us to run out winners on a scoreline of 5-14 to 2-10. Next up the boys face Erne Gaels in the Táin Óg league, followed by Saint Eunan's in the Donegal League. Good luck to Denis, Daithi and the squad in these fixtures.

Our under 15s had no game last week, and trained at their normal times. This week they are getting geared up to play in their Táin Óg league final at the Sligo Centre of Excellence in Scarden. Throw in on Saturday is at 3pm and a big support would be appreciated to get behind the lads.

Our under 13s had an emphatic win against Saint Eunan's in the Donegal Championship on Sunday. With some fantastic performances across the team our lads led right from the off, and by the half-time break had built up a comfortable lead. All players got meaningful game time, with Sunday's victory down to a real panel performance and this handsome victory can be attributed to each and every player involved. We have a great gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org. A draw in the other semi-final has left some doubt as to who Aodh Ruadh will face in the county final, with the original date fixed for the final now being required for the replayed semi-final.

Under 11 hurling will start this Sunday at 11.15am. Having had very low numbers earlier in the year, we have had a number of players either join up with our under 13s, our under 9s, or express an interest in taking part. This is a huge positive considering the low numbers at this group earlier in the year. Anyone else interested in joining in should contact John Larkin on 086-1076883. We will run a training group for the next three weeks with a view to a couple of under 11 games after that.

Our youngest hurlers, the under 7s and under 9s, finished their season on Sunday morning. We had a fantastic year, with over 70 different players taking part over the year, the vast majority of whom have stuck with it and come up consistently for their Sunday morning hurling. All the players were presented with medals for taking part in their blitzes throughout the season, and some treats to reward them for their efforts at training through the year. A huge thanks to all the parents for bringing the players to training, our Covid officers and the team of coaches we had through the year. A particular mention to our under 17 hurlers who were a huge support in terms of helping us throughout the year. We look forward to welcoming back all of these players in 2022, and as always – all new comers will be welcome. We have a lovely gallery of pictures from the final day up on aodhruadh.org.

Ladies
Adult championship action continues this coming Sunday. The seniors will be away to Killybegs in the Intermediate Championship, while the Reserves will be at home against Muff in the Junior Championship. Both games will throw in at 11am.

It wasn't to be for the minor ladies last Thursday as they faded out in the final quarter against Saint Eunan's in a tie which looks likely to have settled the destination of the league title. Played in perfect conditions in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh, the first half was an evenly fought affair. The hosts got off to the perfect start when a surging run by Emer O'Brien was halted illegally and the referee had no option, but to point to the spot. Caitlin McGarrigle coolly dispatched the penalty and that was quickly followed by a point for Erin O'Loughlin. Lucy McGlynn and Katie O'Brien then tagged on scores and with eight minutes played Aodh Ruadh lead 1-3 to no score. In a four-minute spell from the 9th to 13th minute St Eunan's catapulted themselves into the lead with a strike for 2-1, an advantage they carried into the first water break. The second quarter was tense and error strewn. Katie O'Brien levelled matters on 24 minutes, but Eunan's pointed on the stroke of time to lead by the minimum at the turn around. Aodh Ruadh had created a lot of chances, but hadn't made full use of them, while the Letterkenny girls would have known they were very fortunate to be in the lead having lived on scraps for much of the first half. In the second half it was role reversal with Eunan's hitting the ground running, landing 1-2 before a Niamh Hughes point opened Ballyshannon's second half account Katie O'Brien and the visitors swapped points before Grainne Maguire crashed home a spectacular goal. Eunan's pointed again though and at the last water break it was Aodh Ruadh 2-6 Saint Eunan's 3-7. Ballyshannon needed a big final quarter, but it never materialised. Their opponents hit a goal shortly after the resumption and heads dropped. Katie O'Brien did fire home a well taken goal, but it was a case of too little too late and it finished Aodh Ruadh 3-6 Saint Eunan's 6-9. As ever Caitlin McGarrigle gave her absolute all, while Erin O'Loughlin and Niamh Hughes also worked hard, but Saint Eunan's superior hunger was the difference on the day. We have pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org. This Thursday the minors have a home tie against Killybegs at 7pm.

Our underage ladies have come up short in two major finals in the past month, but that wasn't to be the case with the under 16s who took on Urris in their long-delayed Division 3 decider. The game was played on lovely Saturday afternoon in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. With Donegal LGFA electing not to play finals at underage level, this delayed league round robin game became a final by default, with the winner topping the division. Aodh Ruadh took a firm grip of proceedings from the very start and never relinquished it at any point. The irrepressible Cádhla Dolan hit the net a minute in for the first of what was to be a 5-5 haul in this match. She quickly added 1-1 before Jodie Meade opened her account with a point. Dolan then completed her hat-trick just seven minutes in with a quick-reaction fisted goal. Meade added a free before Urris hit their first point of the day on 14 minutes. Annie Keon cancelled that out though and it was 3-4 to 0-1 at the first water break. Aodh Ruadh were taking some fine points, and Michaela McCaffrey, Hannah McGuinness and Annie Keon were all on the mark after the restart. Cádhla Dolan then added another 1-1 before Urris managed to find the net. Aodh Ruadh got the last couple of points of the half though from Cara O'Loughlin and Hannah McGuinness to leave it Aodh Ruadh 4-10 Urris 1-1 at the interval. Ballyshannon eased off the gas a bit in the third quarter, and a plucky Urris outfit managed to edge the scoring in this spell. Annie Keon, Cádhla Dolan, Cara O'Loughlin and Lauren Foy kept the score board ticking over, but Urris struck back with 1-4. The visitors kept battling hard right to the end, but Aodh Ruadh weren't going to be denied here. Cara O'Loughlin was on the mark again and, with Cádhla Dolan fittingly have the final say with a 1-2 salvo, Eugene McHale's long whistle saw it finish Aodh Ruadh 5-17 Urris 3-7. It was a well-deserved win for the girls and capped an undefeated run through the division. Aodh Ruadh were superb in every section of the pitch, showing quality passing and proving economic with their score taking opportunities. In the rearguard Mollie Travers was brilliant between the posts, her kick outs were measured to perfection, and she made some brilliant stops. Fódhla Sheerin and Orlaith Toland hoovered up any ball that came their way, and Dairín Sweeny made a number of good relieving runs from defence. Andrea Moore and Ciara Larkin were immense. Moore may be small in stature, but she stood tall and absorbed a great deal of opposition physicality without ever giving in, tormenting them for the full match. Ciara Larkin chased down every ball like her life depended on it. Cara O'Loughlin and Lauren Foy dominated the middle third. Up front Annie Keon and Cádhla Dolan were an unstoppable scoring axis. The Division 3 winning team and scorers were Mollie Travers; Orlaith Toland, Fódhla Sheerin, Christina McCaffrey, Andrea Moore, Ciara Larkin, Dairín Sweeny; Cara O'Loughlin (0-3), Lauren Foy (0-1); Michaela McCaffrey (0-1), Annie Keon (0-3), Joe Meade (0-2, 1f); Niamh McGloin, Cádhla Dolan (5-5), Hannah McGuinness (0-2). Subs: Orlaith Gallagher, Kelly Irwin, Orlaith O'Neill, Shauna McGloin, Emer McDevitt, Cara Davitt. The Urris club special deserve praise for travelling the long distance to make this fixture happen and putting up a real battling performance to the end. The only disappointing aspects of the day were that the Division 3 trophy was unavailable for presentation, nor was there an official present from Donegal LGFA. The joint captains Fódhla Sheerin and Jodie Meade were presented with a trophy sourced locally and made fine speeches thanking everyone who had contributed to the success. Well done to all the players and management on finally taking home some silverware for the Ladies club.

Our under 12 girls have a challenge at home this Wednesday against Four Masters at 5.45pm. Training for the team continues on Saturday from 11am to 12pm.

Pitch Bookings
With light fading, games have to start earlier and it is becoming difficult to take two matches on the same evening. Timely booking is essential so clashes can be resolved quickly. The starting times for underage training in the evening times should be reviewed to ensure the main field in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh is available to take games from 6.30pm over the coming weeks.

Father Tierney Park redevelopment
Good progress is being maintained on this major project with the base for the new playing field and a substantial part of the drainage system taking shape. We encourage anyone interested in viewing the project to use the safe viewing area which we have provided for this purpose. To help with the administration of the Sponsor a Sod campaign sellers are asked to make returns regularly and as soon as possible to Tom Daly, Michael Daly or David McLoone.

Boot exchange
Our boot exchange programme is now up and running. Anybody who wants to exchange boots going forward, please text Packie McGrath on 087-9794696.

Old hurleys home
A number or parents have kindly donated hurleys and helmets that are no longer in use. If you have any hurls and helmets you would like to see used, please let us know and we will put them back into use!

Football
Aodh Ruadh make their long-awaited return to senior championship this Sunday. Four Masters will be the opposition for both our seniors and reserves. The seniors take on the Donegal town men in Tir Chonaill Park on Sunday at 2pm, with that game being followed by the reserves at 3.30pm. We wish Barry Ward, Peter Gallagher and both squads all the very best in their preparations.

The minors recorded a good result on Friday evening with a fancied Termon side prevailing by the bare minimum in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. It finished 1-5 to 0-9 in favour of the visitors after a hard fought contest. This Friday squad travel to take on Glenties in the penultimate game of their championship programme. Throw in will be at 6.15pm.

The Aodh Ruadh under 15s put in a magnificent display against a very strong Naomh Conaill outfit in Ballyshannon last Tuesday. It finished 1-16 to 2-7 in favour of the visitors, but it could have been a lot closer if the Ernesiders had managed to convert a couple of their late goal chances. Corey Sheridan continues to impress between the posts, and Jun Hui Lin at full back was very secure. The two Doogan cousins, Liam and Eoin, worked their socks off right through in a rearguard which had plenty on their plate with a Glenties side riding high in the league. In the centre of the park Tommy Clyne carried a lot of good ball and made some excellent penetrating runs. Darragh Summerville had an eye-catching shift at midfield, while Oran Gillespie covered every inch of the pitch. In the final third Ted O'Donnell, Barry Campbell and Dara McGloin all made the most of any chances that came their way. The boys next match will be away to Killybegs on Tuesday evening.

Under 9 training continues as normal on Friday evening from 6.15pm to 7.25pm. The final game of the season is fixed for Saturday at home to Ardara. Throw-in is at 11.30am. It would be good to see as much support up as possible. Again, we would like to extend our best wishes to the boys who are making their First Holy Communion this Saturday.

Hurling
Aodh Ruadh brushed aside the challenge of Four Masters in their championship clash on Friday evening as it finished 5-22 to 0-9 in Tir Chonaill Park. Aodh Ruadh simply had too much firepower for the Donegal town outfit to handle. Oisin and Senan Rooney bossed the game throughout and three first half goals helped ensure the tie was all but over at the interval. The best of those three pointers was a spectacular individual effort from Stephen Connolly, with Oisin Rooney also striking for a brace as half-time approached. It was 3-13 to 0-4 as the teams switched ends, but Ballyshannon didn't take the foot off the accelerator. With Gareth Sheerin in immaculate form from dead ball, Aodh Ruadh continued to stretch their advantage. Further goals from Patrick Cassidy and Martin Larkin further gilded an excellent all-round display from the Ernesiders. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Ryan O’Brien; Conor Kennedy, Jack Matthews, Peter Horan; Adam Rami, Damien Cleary, Caelan Drummond; Senan Rooney (0-5), Conor McNeely; Gareth Sheerin (0-10, 8f), Oisin Rooney (2-4), Stephen Connolly (1-2), Patrick Cassidy (1-0), Martin Larkin (1-1), Ciaran Kelly. Subs: Daniel Downey for Pat Cassidy (51), Rory Cullen for Oisin Rooney (56). The round robin stages of the championship are due to conclude this Friday, with the visit of Letterkenny Gaels to Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh for a 6.30pm throw-in.

The under 17s hurlers had a local derby against Erne Gaels last Tuesday night in the Táin Óg league. It was a cracking encounter with the lead changing several times before Aodh Ruadh came out on top by a single point, with Aaron Cullen outstanding in at full forward. At the final whistle the scores were 2-17 to 4-10.

On Thursday night the squad took on table toppers Saint Eunan's at Convoy in another close encounter. As the old saying goes goals win games and this proved to be the case on Thursday with Eunan's raising two crucial green flags. As hard as Aodh Ruadh tried they could not breach the Eunan's net, losing on a scoreline of 2-8 to 0-11. Aaron Cullen up front and Ryan Keenaghan at full back were excellent, but man of the match was Aaron Neilan who was outstanding at centre back. The team's last game of the league takes place this Wednesday night against Carndonagh in Convoy. A win for Aodh Ruadh would set up a league final against Saint Eunan's.

Our under 15s travelled to Sligo Centre of Excellence in Scarden for their Táin Óg final last weekend. Unfortunately, our opponents, Western Gaels from Sligo, were a superior outfit, and by the first water break they were well ahead. With a few positional changes, we were able to gain a bit of composure in the middle third and edge our way back into the game, but we were unable to convert our opportunities whilst our opponents were making all their chances count. At half time the Ballyshannon lads were asked to maintain with their work rate, with the aim being to win the second half. They succeeded in that goal, limiting Western Gaels to 1-1, and scoring six points themselves. Whilst it wasn’t a good day for Aodh Ruadh, the management were exceptionally proud of our players work rate, attitude and commitment to play the game in the right spirit. They hurled their hearts out right up until the final whistle. Their next outing will be in the Donegal League semi-final, with date and venue to be confirmed.

Our under 13s had no game this week, and are looking forward to a Donegal league final against Carndonagh at the Donegal Centre of Excellence at Convoy this Thursday, throw-in 6pm. The Sunday morning training session was full of positivity leading up to this decider, as the management team put the lads through their paces for their final clash. Best of luck to all the players and management!

Our under 11 panel trained together for the first time this year. On what was a hugely positive morning we had a total of 20 players training. Numbers at the start of the year were very low, but we now have the basis of a good squad with eight under 11s, and some of our under 9s added into the mix. We are training for the next two weeks with a view to two games to compete in their short season. So if there are any other under 11 players who want to take up hurling don't hesitate to contact John Larkin on 086-1076883.

Ladies
Aodh Ruadh fielded two sides of 15 in the championship on Sunday and emerged victorious in both games. The Aodh Ruadh seniors, sporting their new jerseys kindly sponsored by Ballyshannon Shoe Company, were in Fintra where had to dig deep to get the better of a very physical Killybegs outfit powered by their county star Suzanne White. The Ballyshannon girls put in a phenomenal defensive performance in the first half to lead by 1-5 to 0-3 at the interval. Up front they passed up a few decent goal scoring chances, but Cáit Gillespie did manage to raise a green flag after a driving run through the Killybegs cover. In the third quarter the hosts managed to edge matters and there were just two points between the sides. It didn't look good at the water break as Aodh Ruadh had been reduced to 13 with Caitlin McGarrigle and Hannah Doherty both lined on questionable yellow cards. However, the Ernesiders really rose to the challenge and got their reward with a fantastic breakaway goal. Saoirse McDevitt did brilliantly to turn possession and break up the pitch. She fed Cáit Gillespie who picked out Elaine Dorrian with a peach of a pass. Dorrian made no mistake, and finished her chance with real aplomb. She added a point not long after as the visitors held on for a 2-11 to 2-5 victory which secures their place in the intermediate championship semi-finals. Bridín Maguire was outstanding in goals, and the defence were magnificent right through with Anna Rafferty standing out for keeping going despite taking some very heavy hits. Caitlin McGarrigle and Saoirse McDevitt both excelled also. Up front Cáit Gillespie, Elaine Dorrian, Orla Keon, Donna Martin and Katie O'Brien all contributed well.

The reserves entertained Muff in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. It proved to be a highly entertaining encounter with plenty of thrills and spills. The opening exchanges were nervy with both sides passing up some good chances. Muff enjoyed a lot of possession, but Aodh Ruadh defended really well and didn't offer many clear scoring opportunities. Ballyshannon were more economical throughout and got off the mark with a super score from an acute angle by Amanda Mahon. Roisin McGloin and Sarah Daly also pointed, but the first water break saw the visitors leading by two points. On the resumption Aodh Ruadh took things up a notch and points from Sarah Daly and Roisin McGloin were complimented by a well taken goal by McGloin which thrust the Shamettes into a 1-6 to 0-5 half-time lead. In the second half things went a bit crazy. On the score board Muff enjoyed the better of the third quarter, it was 1-8 apiece at the next water-break, but that doesn't tell the full story. Aodh Ruadh managed to get the ball in the net, but with the referee registering no reaction, the Muff goalkeeper sheepishly kicked the ball out as if nothing and happened and the goal didn't make it as far as the score board. Then a soaring effort from Grainne Maguire sailed straight to the back of the net, but the referee marked it down as a point. Frustrated and bemused Aodh Ruadh dusted themselves down and put in a superb final 15 minutes. Grainne Maguire nailed a crucial free on the resumption to give the homesters the edge, then Roisin McGloin went on a charging 30 metre run right through heart of the Muff defence before lasering a shot to the bottom right corner of the net. A sensational goal. Meabh McCloskey and Fódhla Sheerin added well taken points as Aodh Ruadh finished the game with the wind in their sails. The final score was 2-12 to 1-9, a first ever championship win for the Aodh Ruadh reserve ladies. It was a superb display by every single one of the Ballyshannon girls. Rionach Sheerin excelled herself with a tenacious marking job, while Nicole McCabe, Sarah Patton, and Kate Cunningham were brilliant in midfield, up front we had great outings from Roisin McGloin, Sarah Daly and Grainne Maguire. We have gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Championship action continues next Sunday for our reserves, while our seniors have a rest week. The reserves are at home against Malin at 11am. It would be good to see a big support up at the Páirc for this team who give it their all every day they go out.

It was honours even after an absorbing battle between the minor ladies of Aodh Ruadh and Killybegs which ebbed and flowed for the full 60 minutes. Aodh Ruadh got off to a great start with goals from Orla Keon and Abi Barrett, but Killybegs came back with an unanswered 1-4 to edge matters at the first water break. Aodh Ruadh restarted well with points from Annie Keon and Niamh Hughes followed by a super goal from Annie Keon. Killybegs hung in with two points in response, but Aodh Ruadh had the final say of the half with Abi Barrett again finishing to the net. The sides turned around with the scoreline reading Aodh Ruadh 4-2 Killybegs 1-8. It looked like Aodh Ruadh would push on early in the second half with Annie Keon adding her second goal of the game. However, Killybegs immediately came back with a goal of their own and added a further 1-3 without reply. An Abi Barrett point before the water break left it 5-3 to 3-10, the visitors leading by the minimum and the game finely balanced. It looked like the game was heading away from the Ballyshannon girls when Killybegs landed the first two points of the second half, but a crisply struck goal by Ciara Gillespie levelled matters before a fine point from Katie O'Brien edged the Ernesiders back into the lead. Killybegs had one last kick in them though and managed to pick off the final score of the game, a point which saw the tie end in a draw. It was probably a deserved result on the balance of the exchanges. Lauren Foy was excellent in goal for Ballyshannon while Tia McFarland was immense in defence on the Killybegs danger-woman. Further out the pitch Annie Keon was probably player of the match, with Abi Barrett also showing strongly. The girls have no game this week.

The under 14s had an entertaining run out against Naomh Ultan in a challenge on Monday evening. All players got good game time with a lot of good performances. Hannah Downey and Ellie Brennan took some lovely scores. Ciara Larkin scored a real blaster of a goal, even if it was for the wrong team! Nessa Mitchell, Aoife Travers and Abbie Gallagher all had fine games with Grace Dolan pulling off some great saves between the posts. Thanks to Naomh Ultan for travelling and contributing to a good sporting contest enjoyed by all. The girls are due to face Four Masters as well in the next week or so.

The under 12s played Four Masters last Wednesday night in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. Both sides had large numbers so we were able to play two games side by side. Both games were very competitive with Four Masters shading the first game and Aodh Ruadh prevailing in the second one. We now look forward to our final game at home to Naomh Ultan this Wednesday at 6pm.

The under 10 season will be wrapping up with an in-house tournament over the final two weeks of September with a round robin competition between four teams. There will be a trophy and medals for the winners with goodie bags for all the participants. Further details will be supplied in due course.

Football
Sunday was a day Ballyshannon Gaels had waited over a decade for, and full credit to the men in white and green, they didn't disappoint. Aodh Ruadh simply had too much for Four Masters in every department in this game. In glorious sunny conditions Ballyshannon took the initiative early on and never relinquished it. They lead by five points at the first water break and had extended that out further to eight as Jimmy White whistled for half-time. Aodh Ruadh had been threatening to raise a green flag for much of the game, and when the outstanding Nathan Boyle hit the net on 38 minutes it was effectively game over. There was 15 points between them at the last water break, and such was Aodh Ruadh's stranglehold the hosts only managed their first score from play in the 49th minute. The final 15 minutes were played out with Aodh Ruadh perhaps already turning one eye to the visit of Naomh Conaill to Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh next week. It finished Aodh Ruadh 1-21 Four Masters 0-10. It was very much a team display from Aodh Ruadh with every man taking care of their assigned tasks with diligence and dash. Nathan Boyle's display was well worth €10 of anyone's money. Conor Patton's bottomless lungs are a fright to behold at times. Eddie Lynch and Kyle Murray were very stylish at half back. Philip Patton's reliability was complimented by Mark McGlynn's appetite for hard work and willingness to offer a passing or shooting option. Shane McGrath roved the final third to great effect too. The subs all contributed well on their introduction too. We have a full match report and pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

The tables were turned in the reserve fixture where Four Masters ran out 4-12 to 1-7 victors. Aodh Ruadh had made a reasonably good fist of things in the first half with a four-point tally from Diarmaid McInerney seeing the score board read Four Masters 1-10 Aodh Ruadh 0-6 at the interval. In the second half though it was one way traffic, and while Kerry Ryan did strike for an early goal, the lion's share of the scoring action was up the other end of the pitch as it finished 4-12 to 1-7. Despite the goal concessions Mark Gallagher had a good game, Odhran McGarrigle got through a lot of work and veteran Dermot Slevin never gave up the fight. We have a gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Next up is the visit of Naomh Conaill to Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh this Sunday. The senior game throws in at 2pm and is followed by the reserve fixture at 3.30pm. It would be great to see a big showing of support up for both teams.

The minors put in a battling performance on the road at Naomh Conaill last Friday. A claustrobhic first half during which defences were on top saw the scores at 0-3 to 0-1 in favour of the homesters at half-time and not many in attendance at Davy Brennan Memorial Park would have forecast the final scoreline was to come. Naomh Conaill came flying out of the traps in the second half sending over two early scores from distance before engineering a well worked goal from a tight angle to leave the scores at 1-5 to 0-2. Shortly after Aodh Ruadh went down to 14 men and Naomh Conaill scored the resulting free to leave it at 1-6 to 0-2 with it all to do for the Ballyshannon lads. To their credit, Aodh Ruadh didn’t let their heads drop and began to chip away at Naomh Conaill’s lead with Shane Delahunty and Damian Weber sending over a couple of magnificent left-footed efforts to kick-start the fight back. Aodh Ruadh continued to chase the game putting the Glenties kick-out under pressure and gaining momentum through further scores from Cian McKenna and Jack Gallagher which was only interrupted by a solitary Naomh Conaill point on the counter attack. With three minutes remaining Aodh Ruadh’s pressure finally reaped rewards as they deservedly drew level at 0-10 to 1-7. Unfortunately, playing almost an entire half with 14 men meant space would inevitably appear late on as Ballyshannon chased the game and Naomh Conaill broke for a late goal and a point off the resulting kick out. Again, though, Aodh Ruadh responded with Darragh Dolan weaving through a congested Naomh Conaill rear guard to slam home to the top corner. The final word would go to the Glenties men however as they profited from a long kick-out and despite Aaron Cullen’s best efforts the ball rebounded off the post across the face goal for an easy Naomh Conaill tap in. It ended Naomh Conaill 3-9 Aodh Ruadh 1-10. There was some excellent football played by Aodh Ruadh in the second half led by Ryan Keenaghan who was outstanding at full back, Shane Delahunty gave an exhibition in midfield along with Damian Weber who hit three crucial scores from distance. Credit also to Aidan Sweeny who again gave a solid display in the half back line and is developing into a very promising defender.
The week previous Aodh Ruadh had ran another big gun close when it finished 1-5 to 0-9 against Termon in Munday's after a hard fought contest. It wasn't a day for flowing football with wet conditions making for difficult handling. Nevertheless Aodh Ruadh have got off to the perfect start when they raced through on goal, but Damian Weber's shot was well saved. As the sides went in at the first water break it was all square at two points apiece. By the the interval the scoring hadn't advanced much further, thanks in part to two outstanding saves from Aaron Cullen. With Jack Gallagher and Damian Weber taking some nice points it was 0-5 to 0-4 in favour of Termon, and the game was very much up for grabs. The Aodh Ruadh defence were superb all evening, but at times the last pass didn't reach its destination and the Ernesiders just coughed up too many turn overs in the final third. Working on the counter, Termon started to pull away into 0-9 to 0-4 lead. An Aodh Ruadh point cut the deficit, and then with time nearly up the hosts won a kick out up the field and Danny Breen Brosnan got on the end of the move to slot the ball into the bottom left hand corner. Aodh Ruadh won the next kick out and all players pushed up the field, including keeper Aaron Cullen. The lads played the ball intelligently as they tried to work a score, but Termon managed to win one last turn over and with that the referee blew the final whistle.

The Aodh Ruadh under 15s have had a busy week with two games over the seven days. Last Tuesday they were in Killybegs, with the hosts taking the spoils on a scoreline of 2-10 to 1-3, a scoreline which only tells half the story. Despite travelling with low numbers Aodh Ruadh lead by two points in the second half and the Fishermen were only able to make their deeper bench count in the final ten minutes when they pulled away. Killian McPhelim capped a good outing for the Ernesiders with a well-deserved goal on the night. On Monday evening the squad were on the road again, but came up short against a very strong Four Masters outfit who prevailed 4-12 to 1-7. Once again Corey Sheridan did very well between the sticks, saving a number of certain goals. Out the field Eoin Doogan did very well defensively, while Darragh Summerville gave his all in the middle of the park.

Our under 11 boys are training on Mondays from 6pm to 7pm in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. This Thursday the squad will be taking on Bundoran and Naomh Bríd in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. All players are to be up for 5.30pm.

The under 9s had their final game of the season on Saturday in a very competitive outing against Ardara. We had 38 boys getting game time over three matches. The final training session of the year will take place on Friday evening at 6.15pm. There will be a presentation of medals afterwards. All parents welcome. Once again, best wishes to the boys who are making their First Holy Communion this Saturday.

Hurling
Letterkenny Gaels conceded their scheduled tie with Aodh Ruadh on Friday, and so Ballyshannon are now into the last four of the Donegal Junior Championship. Congratulations to the team and management on securing a semi-final place. They now await the outcome of the remaining games in the round robin stages to learn their opposition.

Our under 17s had their final league match of group stages when they faced up to Carndonagh in the Donegal Centre of Excellence in Convoy. Our boys won out on a score line of 2-14 to 2-4 and will now face Saint Eunan's in their League final decider. The date and venue for that has yet to be confirmed.

The under 15s are training at their usual times this week as they step up their preparations for our league semi-final against Saint Eunan's provisionally fixed for Thursday, 30th September, but with the evenings getting darker this may change to a weekend. Training continues on Tuesday at 6.30pm and Thursday at 6.15pm.

The under 13s are celebrating another fantastic win. This week the opposition was Carndonagh in the Donegal League decider. In what was a tight battle from the outset, our lads held a narrow lead throughout the first half. Ballyshannon had some excellent performances right throughout the team and made a few changes as the second half wore on. We kept the score board ticking over into the third quarter with some great point scoring, however as the half wore on and Carndonagh tired, we finished the game as a contest with a brace of goals. A top-class team performance and a final score of 3-10 to 0-6. Next up for this fine team is their championship semi-final, where, by the luck of the draw, they will face Carndonagh again.

Our under 11 panel trained together for the second time enjoyed a fantastic morning of hurling. Ulster GAA coach and Hurling Development Officer Declan Sherlock spent some time working with our under 11s and emphasised the importance of coaching FUNdamentals at this age group. He took our lads for a session on coaching, how to strike from the hand and all of our younger players found it hugely beneficial. Training continues this Sunday morning at 11.45am, so if there are any other under 11 players that want to take up hurling contact John Larkin on 086-1076883.

Declan Sherlocks visits Aodh Ruadh
On Sunday morning we welcomed Declan Sherlock, Ulster GAA coach and Hurling Development Officer. We started the morning with Declan observing our session, before moving into Declan taking the lads for a couple of exercises. Declan had great things to say about this team and particularly commented on their work rate and application. All of our boys found it very enjoyable, and Declan even had a few pointers for Paul, Daithi and PO after the session.

Ladies
The reserves flew the flag for the adult ladies in championship last week as they took on Malin in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Sunday. They put in a battling display, but it wasn't enough to get the better of an Inishowen outfit who just had that wee bit too much on the day. As the sides felt each out in the first quarter, Abi Barrett opened the scoring with a fine point, which was soon followed by lovely effort from Sarah Daly. Unfortunately, good keeping denied Ballyshannon a couple of early goals and it was Malin who lead by a point at the first water break. A green flag was raised on the restart, but unfortunately it was for the girls in amber and black. Malin added a point, but Aodh Ruadh continued to work well and points from Sarah Patton and Abi Barrett meant the game was very much in the melting pot at the turnaround, Aodh Ruadh 0-4 Malin 1-4. It was Malin who pushed on after the break though, hitting an unanswered 2-5 which effectively sealed the result. This Ballyshannon side certainly don't want for character though, and they dominated the final quarter, the superb Sarah Patton raided up for two well-taken points before cutting through the dense Malin defence to smash a shot at goal. Her effort was well saved, but the alert Fódhla Sheerin pounced on the loose ball and smashed to the net for a richly deserved goal. Ciara Gillespie then tagged on a point and a free as Aodh Ruadh finished the game with their tails up. It finished Aodh Ruadh 1-8 Malin 3-11. Sarah Patton and Kate Cunningham both left everything on the pitch. Megan McGee excelled in the defence, while young subs Dairín Sweeny and Fódhla Sheerin both made great impacts off the bench.

The championship action continues next Sunday. The seniors host Saint Eunan's in Park Aoidh Ruaidh while our reserves are on the road to Burt. Both games throw in at 11am.

Our under 12 Girls played their final league game against a determined Naomh Ultan side at home on Wednesday. Aodh Ruadh had the better of the exchanges in the first quarter, but Naomh Ultan pulled it back approaching half time. The last two quarters were nip and tuck, however Aodh Ruadh always maintained their lead. It was a great game to finish off the season with all 26 girls playing their part and four others unavoidably absent. The girls have trained hard all season with consistently high numbers and deserve great credit for their commitment.

The under 10 season will be wrapping up with an in-house tournament being staged this Tuesdays and next Tuesday at Coláiste Cholmcille. Throw-in times will be at 6.15pm on both evenings. There will be a trophy and medals for the winners with goodie bags for all the participants.

Condolences
The club extends our sympathies to the family and friends of Niall McQuillan of Bundoran who passed away on Monday. Niall starred with the all-conquering Ballyshannon Bundoran combination Saint Joseph’s in the 1970s.

Club Executive meeting
The monthly Aodh Ruadh club executive meeting will take place via Zoom this Thursday at 9pm. All club executive committee members are asked to attend. Items for any other business should to be submitted to club secretary Lisa McTernan by 3pm on Wednesday.

Football
The first senior championship game on the Rock in over a decade wasn't graced with clement weather, but that didn't faze a gritty Aodh Ruadh side who dug in and were full value for a share of the points against the reigning county champions, Naomh Conaill. There was a steady downpour throughout this contest and the greasy conditions didn't make for flowing football. In the first half there were nerves apparent in the Aodh Ruadh ranks as Glenties eased themselves into the game. By the first water break the visitors were 1-4 to 0-2 ahead and looking very slick. Oisin Rooney (mark) and Nathan Boyle (45) got the Ernesiders' scores. Martin Regan's men pushed on after the water break with a further 1-1 taking them nine points clear in the run up to half-time. With game looking like it might run away from them, Aodh Ruadh finally threw off the shackles. Points from Nathan Boyle and Philip Patton helped them settle before David Dolan gathered a long ball in from Darren Drummond and sent a stinging shot just over the bar. Naomh Conaill's luck deserted them not long after though when Michael McKenna was the creator for Dolan to smash to the net as Marc Brown's half time whistle sounded with the scores reading Aodh Ruadh 1-6 Naomh Conaill 2-5. Having found their rhythm, Aodh Ruadh were much more like their normal selves in the second half. Philip Patton ate away at the deficit with an early point before Michael McKenna flighted over the score of the game to make it all square. The sides then swapped scores with a Philip Patton free cancelling out a Charles McGuinness point. Ethan O'Donnell then edged the county champions in front again, but another Philip Patton dead ball levelled matters once more. Neither side could find a winner in the remaining time, but Ballyshannon had Karl O'Brien to thank for an outstanding save on that count. Up the other end, Glenties rode their luck too when Mark McGlynn looked to have won a free which could have clinched the game for Aodh Ruadh, but play was waved on and the sides had to settle for a share of the spoils. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows:- Karl O'Brien; Jason Granaghan, Colm Kelly, Conor Patton; Eddie Lynch, Johnny Gethins, Kyle Murray; Eamonn McGrath, Nathan Boyle (0-2); Philip Patton (0-4, 2f), Darren Drummond (0-1), Mark McGlynn; Oisin Rooney (0-1 m), David Dolan (1-1), Shane McGrath. Subs: Michael McKenna (0-1) for Murray; Ryan Granaghan for Nathan Boyle (injured). We have a gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

The reserve clash was a rather more one-sided affair, although the final scoreline of 2-17 to 0-3 in favour of the Glenties men doesn't reflect the amount of good football played by a depleted Aodh Ruadh side. The homesters had a reasonable amount of possession, but time and again their attacking forays broke down on the opposition 45 metre line and counter-attacking scores followed for a Naomh Conaill side augmented by a number of former county players and senior championship winners. Credit must go to those Aodh Ruadh young guns in their first year of adult football like Colm McGloin, Matt Gillespie, Conor Foy, Daire Gallagher, Kyle McCaffery, and Conall Bradshaw who stuck to their task in difficult circumstances and fought to the end. The older guard of Gary Carty, Brian Gillespie, Diarmuid Slevin and Kerry Ryan also worked hard to stem the tide, with Mark Gallagher showing well again between the posts. We have a gallery of shots from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

The championship action continues this weekend with Aodh Ruadh on their travels to Letterkenny's O'Donnell Park. The action gets under way on Sunday with the reserve fixture at 2.30pm, and that is followed by the meeting of the senior sides at 4pm.

The minors concluded their league campaign with a big win over a spirited Dungloe team in Páirc Aodh Ruadh last Saturday. A lively first quarter saw a clinical Dungloe outfit build an early cushion as Aodh Ruadh struggled to make their possession count on the score board shooting into a tricky breeze. It looked like it was going to be one of those days, but a well-engineered goal from Robbie Murphy steadied Aodh Ruadh and after that the lads found their range and began to get on top with successive scores from Damian Weber and Jack Gallagher. Dungloe were game opposition in the first half and were always dangerous going forward, putting over some excellent long-range scores. Dungloe registered 1-10 in the first half with only two wides which goes some way to show how dangerous the Rosses men were in front of the posts. The score of the half went Aodh Ruadh’s way though, with Eoghan Kelly finding the top corner from 20 metres with a sublime finish to send Aodh Ruadh in with a three-point lead at the half time interval. Dungloe tired after half-time and were made pay by a lively Ballyshannon with the wind at their backs. The hosts built up a significant head of steam and killed the game as a contest with a number of well taken goals. Shane Delahunty was best for Aodh Ruadh with an exceptional display from midfield - particularly in the first half when the game was up for grabs, and his appetite for breaking ball around the middle third helped to turn the tide in favour of the Ernesiders. Robbie Murphy also grew into the game after a difficult start and can be very happy with his 2-9 contribution to the win. Damian Weber was also in fine form in front of the posts, contributing 1-5 to the final scoreline of 7-11 to 1-14. The lads have now qualified for the A championship and have been drawn to play against unbeaten Sean MacCumhaill's in MacCumhaill park next Monday evening, 8th October.

The Aodh Ruadh under 15s have their final game of the round robin league stages at home this Tuesday when Ardara are the guests in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh at 6pm. With the official programme now complete, the lads attention will be turning to the Bakery Cup over the next few weeks.

The under 11s train as normal this Thursday from 6pm to 7pm at Coláiste Cholmcille. On Saturday we conclude our under 11 internal league, with three finals taking place. These should be very hotly contested deciders, after five group stage matches. Iarla Hartin v Darragh McCready will surely be a close affair, with the bare minimum between them when they met in the group stages, in favour of Iarla’s team. Next up will be Manus Conlon v Anthony Duffy. Again, this is expected to be a close match, with both men probably picking each other up in a midfield battle. And finally, it’s a battle of the defenders, Darragh Patton v Markko Branley. Both men will be leading from the back, in a final which again is too close to call. The action throws in at 2pm on Saturday, in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh. All boys are asked to be up for 1.30pm. There will be cups and medals presented afterwards, with a special award for most the improved player on each team.

The under 9s finished up for the season with a fun session last Friday. Huge credit to all the boys who put in a tremendous effort all year. Thanks also to the management and mentors who gave of their time this year to train and develop these players.

Hurling
Aodh Ruadh are scheduled to take on Dungloe / Gaoth Dobhair in the last round of Junior Hurling Championship group games down in Dungloe this Friday at 6pm.

The under 17s will have their A league final this Thursday evening in the Centre of Excellence in Convoy, throwing in at 8.15.pm. This team have enjoyed a great year so far, and it would be great to see some travelling support for the lads. Best of luck to Denis, Daithi and all the team.

The under 15s are training at their usual times this week as we step up our preparations for our league semi-final against Saint Eunan's provisionally fixed for Sunday 10th September at 1pm in Letterkenny. Training continues at 6.30pm Tuesday and 6.15pm on Thursday.

Pride of place this week goes to our under 13 hurlers who qualified for their third final of the year. They took on Carndonagh in a reprise of their recent league final clash, where Aodh Ruadh took the spoils. Once again, the Ernesiders had too much for the Inishowen men and ran out winners on a 4-9 to 3-4 scoreline. Our lads were in control for most of the game, but shipped some late goals in the final quarter to allow Carndonagh back into the match. The squad will be working hard in preparation for their championship final over the next couple of weeks, starting with a blitz this Sunday at 1pm in Páirc Aodh Ruadh. There will be teams from Dungannon, Ballinascreen and Keady travelling to take part and we look forward to a great day of hurling. In previous years, we have honoured Aodh Ó Dálaigh, Alan Ryan and Seamus Grimes, and Billy Finn and John Larkin, and their contribution to hurling in our club through their tournaments. We had hoped to be in a position to run all of these tournaments again this year, but unfortunately weren’t able to do this as Covid restrictions and the compressed sporting calendar limited our options. Sunday's blitz will allow us the opportunity to remember these great men – and we look forward to being able to run their respective tournaments again in 2022.

Our under 11s had their last training session to prepare for their first game out this year. That takes place this Sunday at 10am they face Four Masters in Páirc Aodh Ruadh, with throw in at 10am.

Ladies
The senior ladies booked their place in the semi-finals of the intermediate championship with a hard-fought victory over Saint Eunan's in Páirc Aoidh Ruaidh on Sunday morning. The Ernesiders had the edge right through this encounter, but it was slight, and the game could easily have gone either way. In the end Ballyshannon hit the tape with a finishing spurt to take a merited win. A goal by Cáit Gillespie in the first half thrust Aodh Ruadh into the lead and with Donna Martin and Terri Gallagher picking off points the hosts hit the interval leading by a point. Over the course of the second half Saint Eunan's continued to give it everything, but Aodh Ruadh just held them at arm's length with some fantastic defending from Saoirse McDevitt, Sara Gallagher, Anna Rafferty and Hannah Doherty. The decisive score of the half came from Caoimhe Keon as it finished Aodh Ruadh 2-7 Saint Eunan's 1-8. The result sees Aodh Ruadh book a home semi-final. We have a great gallery of pictures from the game up on aodhruadh.org.

Meanwhile, up in Burt the reserve ladies worked, just as hard, but this time they came out on the wrong end of the two-point margin. Aodh Ruadh got off to a flying start with Meabh Rooney, Grainne Maguire and Sarah Daly (2) hitting unanswered points. Burt got off the mark with a point, quickly following by a goal, but Ballyshannon quickly cancelled that out with an answering point followed by a brilliant Sarah Daly goal to make it 1-5 to 1-1 at the first water break. Aodh Ruadh pushed on again after the break with Grainne Maguire firing over before Meabh Rooney hit the back of the net. Burt answered that with a 1-1 burst, but again Aodh Ruadh repaid with interest, Grainne Maguire striking for 1-2 in short order. The hosts were reeling, but they managed to get a goal just before the break to make it 3-8 to 3-3 as the sides turned around. Aodh Ruadh had the breeze in the second half, but as is so often the case, the elements didn't prove as decisive as might have been expected. Burt came out and landed 2-1, and with Aodh Ruadh struggling to get on the ball it was a welcome sight to see Kate Cunningham charging down the centre of the pitch and placing a low hard shot into the bottom left corner. Niamh Hughes added a point, but Burt raided for another goal. Niamh Hughes then added another point as the sides went to the water break deadlocked at 6-4 to 4-10. Aodh Ruadh got a great start to the final quarter as Grainne Maguire converted a free, but then Burt hit their stride and hit 1-2 to put themselves in the driver seat with time running out. Niamh McGloin slipped over a lovely point to put three between them and then Meabh Rooney was really brave to win a penalty in the dying moments. Grainne Maguire's shot went over rather than under the bar, but there was still time for Aodh Ruadh to take the win if they could manage to fashion a goal scoring chance. Unfortunately, Burt hung on and the chance never came. Nevertheless, Ballyshannon exited the junior championship having brought massive credit to the club with the spirit they have shown this year. Roisin Maguire was very strong between the posts. Shauna Dolan and Megan McGee were a powerful defensive duo. In front of them Nicole McCabe was fearless at centre back and used the ball very well. Kate Cunningham was a real powerhouse in the middle of the pitch. Up front Sarah Daly was magnificent before having to go off with injury, while Grainne Maguire caused the Burt girls endless problems. This brings the reserve ladies season to a conclusion, and the club is very proud of everyone who lined out with the team this year and ensured that not only did we fulfil all fixtures, but we played some great football along the way.

Our adult ladies have a well-deserved rest this coming weekend.

The under 10 season will be wrapping up with an in-house tournament this Tuesday at Coláiste Cholmcille. The action starts at 6.15pm and that will be followed by a trophy presentation and medals for the winners with goodie bags for all the participants.

Sponsor A Sod. How do to do it and who to contact
To fund the development at Father Tierney Park, Aodh Ruadh have launched one of their biggest fund-raising efforts in decades, asking the public to ‘Sponsor A Sod’ at €50 each to help meet the costs of this ambitious plan.
