Dinner Dance 2023
After a three year hiatus, Saturday saw a huge crowd beating their path to the Aodh Ruadh Dinner Dance in Dorrian's Imperial Hotel, with ebuliant Sean Perry, once again at the helm for evening.
Proceedings got underway with the presentations to the 1995 ladies championship winners. There was then a presentation to Mick McGrath on the completion of a very busy, but successful five year term as Cathaoirleach Dhún na nGall. He was the third ever man from the club to hold the highest administrative office in the county and we are immensely proud of this record of service.
The evening then moved on to the individual awards section. Young footballer of the year was the rangy, versatile and laconic Odhran McGarrigle, while newly-wed Kate Cunningham matched her spouse in claiming the Junior Ladies player of the year award. Ciaran was reserve team player back in 2015. The Reserve Team of the year went to a young man who is dedicated to his football and shows great example on and off the pitch, Damian Weber. The young ladies footballer of the year was deservedly collected by teak-tough Caitlin McGarrigle, while Brendan Gillespie was named Senior Hurler of the year, a nomination few could argue with having watched his consistent battling performances over the course of 2022. One of the most emotional moments of the night came when Rory Dunne stepped up to present the Tanya Dunne-O'Shea senior ladies player of the year award to Cáit Gillespie. The pain of Tanya's loss at a such a young age over Christmas was very much still in evidence. The Ciaran Keon senior player of the year went to Eamonn McGrath, surprisingly the first time he has received the award after a number of super years anchoring the Aodh Ruadh midfield.
Next came two team awards. First up were the ladies Junior B championship finalists collecting their runner's up medals after an fantastically successful season where they humbled many a club's first string, and came within an ace of claiming the county title. An incredible achievement for a club's second team, just three years in existence.
That was followed by presentation of medals to the ladies intermediate championship and Division 2 title winning team. It was a phenomenal season for the Aodh Ruadh ladies. They stormed through the season capturing the Division 2 title on a roasting day against Na Dúnaibh in Lifford, arguable their hardest game of the year. Tempered by that stern test they went on a charge through the intermediate championship to claim the title in fine style against Ardara in O'Donnell Park.
Then came time for the presentation of the Hall of Fame award. It is a very prestigious award indeed to be inducted into a group of distinguished Aodh Ruadh names who are etched firmly in our club history. On this occasion it was the turn of John Rooney to take his place among some of the most storied names in the lore of Ballyshannon GAA. You can read Sean Perry's full testimonial on aodhruadh.org.
With the night's ceremonials complete it was time for The Rockhill Ramblers to take the stage and supply the music as Aodh Ruadh continued to mark the year past in appropriate style. We have pictures from the evening's festivities up on aodhruadh.org to view now.

Football
Well done to Coláiste Cholmcille who booked their place in the Markey Cup final with victory over Saint Patrick's High School Keady at Garvaghey on Friday afternoon. The sides were deadlocked at full-time and after extra-time and after the first five penalties were level it took sudden death to separate them. Hero of the hour was Aaron Cullen who showed the province what he's about saving four penalties in the shoot out. Ryan Barrett tucked away the winner to book a decider against Dean Maguirc College of Carrickmore. That game will take place this Wednesday at 7pm in Roslea, and we wish the team and management all the very best in the decider.

We at Aodh Ruadh would like to welcome everybody back to underage training for the 2023 season. We would especially like to invite new-comers to attend our sessions, why not come and give it a go, in a fun and inclusive environment.
The following information is for boys football only. Girls football and hurling information will be circulated in due course.
All boys are asked to bring their own ball to training. Gus Culkin from Ballyshannon Shoe Company will be at the first training for each age group, with the age appropriate balls for sale, for those needing to purchase one.

Ladies football
Big congrats to Cáit Gillespie and Caoimhe Keon who lined out for the senior Donegal ladies on Saturday against Kerry. Elsewhere Cait will be hoping to add a Gaelic Life club All-Star award to the Aodh Ruadh Senior Ladies Player of the year award she received over the weekend at the club dinner dance. Time to get voting folks!

We also had Ciaran Larkin and Cadhla Dolan in action with the county under 16s on Saturday, as Donegal got the better of Antrim in a challenge game at Lifford. The pair are on their travels next weekend when Longford will be the opposition.

Well done also to the Aodh Ruadh girls who lined out for the county under 14s against Leitrim in Bundoran on Sunday afternoon. Ellen Monaghan, Emma O'Donnell, Laoise Foy, Cadhla Gillespie and Rachel Gillespie all did themselves and the club proud and played some great football on the day.

Hurling
Well done to minor players, Tommy Clyne, Jun Hui Lin, Cian McDonald and Killian McPhelim who were part of the Donegal minor team that defeated Tyrone yesterday in a pre-season challenge match.

The juvenile hurling committee would like to extend its congratulations and delight to our very own John Rooney, on his well deserved Hall of Fame award at the Aodh Ruadh dinner dance last Saturday. In his typical unassuming way, John dedicated the award to his dearly departed friends and co-mentors; Billy Finn and John Larkin. We are delighted that these three hurling greats have received the recognition they deserve for all their dedication to hurling in Ballyshannon.

Boot exchange is back
The Aodh Ruadh boot exchange programme is up and running again for the 2023 season. Contact Packie on 087-9794696 if you'd like to exchange your boots for a bigger pair for the new season.

Last One Standing
It was a good weekend for the punters in our last one standing competition, with most of the runners coming through unscathed. Only 60 participants exited last weekend mainly at the hands of the Rossies win over Galway and the draw between Armagh and Mayo. There's a hiatus this weekend, with the next round of NFL games taking place on 18th/19th February.

Ladies football
Donegal Senior ladies hosted Waterford in O'Donnell Park, Letterkenny on Sunday in round four of the league. Two Waterford goals midway through the first half proved to be the difference. While Donegal pushed hard in the second half, they just couldn't find the goal which would have taken them back into the game. Our own Caoimhe Keon played the full 60 minutes and Cáit Gillespie entered the fray for the final 15 minutes. We wish the squad good luck next week as they make the long trip to Cork.

Ciara Larkin had a good outing in county colours last Saturday, scoring a point against Derry from midfield in the team's last match of their pre-season programme. Best of luck to the Ciara Larkin, Cádhla Dolan and the county under 16s in their first game of the Ulster championship. They take on Tyrone on Saturday in Muff at 2pm. Tickets for this game are available online, over 18s €5 and under 18s free.

Any parents or guardian whose daughters would to play under 12 football this year are asked to message the manager on 086-9683913 with their name and their daughter's name.

Congratulations to our under 10s who have been selected for the LGFA under 10 Go Games Activities Day in Croke Park.

Hurling
Congratulations to Kyle McNulty who lined out against Down in the first round of the under 20 hurling championship in Convoy on Saturday. Well done also to Cian McDonald, Jun Hui Lin and Tommy Clyne who donned the county jersey as Donegal took on Down in Convoy in an under 17 Celtic Challenge on Saturday. Good luck to all the lads this Saturday when there will be another double header in Convoy, with Derry the opposition.

Players can also download registration forms from aodhruadh.org and submit this along with the relevant fee directly to their manager. It is essential all players are signed up club members. Non members are not covered by the GAA's injury insurance scheme and cannot line out for the club. Adult members will receive first priority for the club's allocation of All-Ireland final tickets in the event of Donegal contesting the decider. Only adult members registered by 31st March may vote at the club AGM.
