Football
Last Saturday's under 21 fixture against Naomh Conaill was postponed. The squad will be hoping to get back into action this Saturday when they travel to take on Four Master's in Tir Chonaill Park, throw-in at 2pm

Our under 7 boys finished their season on Saturday last, with Melvin Gaels and Glencar Manorhamilton joining the hosts for a very enjoyable blitz in Ballyshannon. Some great games took place over the six rounds of football. Many thanks to Barry Travers and Michael McGrath as well as our under 7 coaches for reffing the matches. All the teams were treated to a great spread of sandwiches, home bakes and sweets afterwards, thanks to our parents and guardians. Many thanks for that and to those who helped with tea and coffee, and the clean up afterwards. We have a great gallery of pictures from the game live on aodhruadh.org now. With the year now finished for the under 7s we would like to thank the players for all their hard work over the year and they parents and guardians for their support too. And of course a big thank you to the managers and mentors who made everything happen.

Hurling
The Juvenile Hurling committee hosted their Annual General Meeting last Monday, 30th October. The committee officers and underage managers reflected and reported on 2023. It was a successful year on many fronts. At the competitive end, the minors under Daithi Breen, Dan Breen and Denis Daly brought home the Táin Óg title and the Donegal League Cup and were beaten finalists in the Championship. The under 15s mentored by Paul Sheridan and Mark Sheerin were crowned Donegal Feile Champions and Táin Óg Champions, runners up in the League and semi-finalists in the championship. The junior groups coached by John Larkin, Marin Larkin and Patrick McGarrigle participated in many challenge matches, Go Games and blitzes, and proved themselves worthy competitors. The under 11s hosted a very successful Aodh Ó Dálaigh tournament and all the junior groups enjoyed a fun trip to the cinema to end their season. There were a number of new recruits at various age groups and our away trips to Féile and Croke Park were a roaring success with all our players behaving brilliantly. Fund-raising was excellent this year and the committee remained self-sufficient for yet another year with a sizable surplus remaining at financial year end. Although there were a number of tensions throughout the year, communications on a whole improved, particularly with Bord na nÓg and the committee look forward to building on that relationship in 2024. One big disappointment was the inability to run our other two home tournaments, the Ryan / Grimes and the Finn / Larkin. This was not for the want of trying, but plans are already afoot to host these as season openers next year instead. Following extensive discussions, a motion will be submitted to the Club AGM to propose a change to 'No Bus Policy' to include exceptional circumstances. In election of officers, the sitting committee was returned for another year. Our sincere thanks, as always, are extended to all who helped with hurling throughout the year creating a real buzz and great atmosphere for our young players. Huge thanks to all our coaches and their helpers for their time and enthusiasm, parents for their fund-raising, support and taxing services, all our sponsors, particularly Rathmore Mechanical Services and Sean Nugent Construction, Teresa Maguire for co-ordinating the lotto, to the Executive and Tom Daly for their assistance and of course, our players for always having the right attitude and behaving in a manner that highlights the culture of Aodh Ruadh.

Good luck to the under 21 hurlers who get their championship campaign underway this Sunday with a trip to the Crossroads to take on Setanta. The action gets under way at 2pm.

Ladies
Pride of place this week goes to Paul Gillespie who has been named county under 16 manager, alongside Bundoran's Dessie McNamara for 2024. We wish the pair the very best of luck for the coming season.

Good luck also to the under 23 ladies who will be facing Urris in the Division 2 semi-final this Sunday at 10.30am, venue to be confirmed.

Training continues for the under 13s this Thursday as they prepare for the competition's knock-out stages.

Football
It was disappointment for the under 21s on Saturday afternoon as a muted performance saw them coming off second best against Four Masters in Father Tierney Park. The first quarter was dominated by the visitors as they eased in to 1-2 to no score lead with both sides playing on the counter. Damian Weber finally got the Ernesiders off the mark in the 17th minute with a free and added a second nine minute later to put a goal between the sides. Four Masters added a further point, but Jack Gallagher answered that with a free on the stroke of time to leave Aodh Ruadh well in contention, but needing to seriously step up the intensity. Unfortunately that didn't happen and the Donegal town men kept the score board ticking over, hitting five points without reply to make it 1-7 to 0-3 with ten minutes left to play. Jack Gallagher broke the run with a free and then Matt Gillespie made a great interception out by the sideline and found Cian Rooney with a lovely pass. Rooney still had a lot to do, but he raced in on goal and dispatched his shot beautifully to leave just a goal between the sides with seven minutes left. Aodh Ruadh went hunting for goal, but they needed Aaron Cullen to make two outstanding stops to keep them in it as the clock ticked down. However, with time almost up Ballyshannon were found exposed at the back again and this time there was nothing Cullen could do as Four Masters hit the net to seal their victory. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Aaron Cullen; Ryan Keenaghan, Kyle Murray, Aidan Sweeny; James Gallagher, Mark McGlynn, Daire Gallagher; Colm McGloin, Matt Gillespie; Eoghan Kelly, Jack Gallagher (0-2f), Darragh Flood Dolan; Damian Weber (0-2f), Cian Rooney (1-0), Harry Howarth. Subs: Cian McKenna for Harry Howarth 38 minutes, Diarmuid Flood Dolan. Aodh Ruadh can still top their group if they can defeat Naomh Conaill in their game this Saturday. Throw-in at Father Tierney Park is at 2pm.

Bord na nÓg are proud to announce they will be staging their annual awards presentation evening after a Covid enforced hiatus. County hot-shot Oisin Gallen will be joining us as we celebrate a year of underage football in Aodh Ruadh at the Abbey Centre on Saturday 25th November. The celebrations will get under way at 5.30pm with presentations to our players from under 9 up to minor on the night.

Ladies
The under 23s' received a walkover in their semi-final against Urris last weekend. They now await the conclusion of the other group games to see who they will face in the Division 2 under 23 final.

Our under 13 girls have a home draw for their championship quarter-final. The last-eight game takes place this Saturday at 11am against Robert Emmet's. Training continues as normal for the girls this Thursday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm.

The underage Ladies awards evening will be taking place this Thursday in the Abbey Centre. Donegal senior star Suzanne White joins us as we celebrate a year of underage football in the club. There will be presentations to all our underage players up to minor level. The doors are open at 7pm with the presentations getting under way at 7.30pm. We hope all our underage players can join us for what should be a great night of craic.

Football
The under 21s game against Naomh Conaill last weekend was postponed. Aodh Ruadh have already confirmed their place in the knock out stages of the competition, but the outcome of the meeting with Glenties will be required to determine which side gets a bye directly into the semi-finals. That game has been refixed for Father Tierney Park this Saturday at 2pm.

Bord na nÓg are proud to announce they will be staging their annual awards presentation evening after a Covid enforced hiatus. County hot-shot Oisin Gallen will be joining us as we celebrate a year of underage football in Aodh Ruadh at the Abbey Centre this Saturday, 25th November. The celebrations will get under way at 5.30pm with presentations to our players from under 9 up to minor on the night.

Ladies
What a night we had in the Abbey Centre last Thursday. The place was absolutely rammed for our underage awards night as we celebrated a memorable 2023. Guest of honour on the night, county star Suzanne White, received a huge reception from the crowd and gave some great insights and advice in her question-and-answer session with master of ceremonies for the evening Michael Daly. There were presentations to every underage player present before moving on to the individual team awards. The winners of those individual awards were as follows: Under 12 Player of the year: Kayla McDermott; Most committed: Dearbhla Gallagher. Under 13 player of the year: Lexi Roper; Most committed: Sophie McGuinness. Under 14 player of the year: Rachel Gillespie; Most committed player: Erin Gallagher. Under 16 player of the year: Katie McGowan; Most committed player: Aoife Travers. Minor player of the year: Andrea Moore; Minor most committed player: Emily McNamee. With the presentations completed Michael Daly wrapped up proceedings by thanking all the parents and guardians for all their support over the course of the year and also thanked everyone who had helped make it such a well run and enjoyable evening. Head along to aodhruadh.org where we have a gallery of nearly 300 images from the evening live now.

The under 23s have had Saint Eunan's confirmed as their Division 2 final opposition. We await confirmation of fixture details, keep an eye on the club's social media output for updates.

Our under 13 girls put in their best performance of the season last Saturday against Robert Emmet's in their quarter-final. Some great football was played by the Shamettes, and they ran out comfortable winners in the end. Thanks to the parents and guardians who helped with tea and treats and the clean up afterwards. Aodh Ruadh are now through to a semi-final against Saint Michael’s, away this Saturday, time to be confirmed. We'd love to see a big travelling support come along to get behind the girls.

All Ireland Scór Sinsear finals
It was a big weekend for the club at the Scór Sinsear finals in Killarney on Saturday. The quiz team of Paddy Kelly, Sylvester Maguire, Eamonn Martin Maguire and John Hughes competed in the Tráth na gCeist finals. They had their strongest display at this stage to date answering 52 out 60 questions, but they it wasn't enough for a top three place. Later on the Ceol Urlise group of Sean O’Brien, Lorraine O’Brien, Michael McGrath, Cíarde Sheerin and Ríonach Sheerin delivered a stellar display on the big stage in the INEC with a great Ballyshannon contingent there to cheer them on. They would have been well-worth the nod, but the judges went with Cork on the night. Nevertheless, it was a very enjoyable event and great to see Ballyshannon talent contesting at this high level. Huge thanks to the club for their support for the competitors and to all those hard-core supporters who made the long trip down to Kerry to support the Shams.

Hurling
The under 21s had a walk over against Setanta at the weekend. They await a fixture for their meeting with Saint Eunan's.

Club AGM
The Aodh Ruadh AGM took place in Aras Aoidh Ruaidh with over 40 members in attendance as we looked back on a successful 2023, crowned by our reserve mens' footballers' championship triumph, and made plans for the coming season. In a lively and engaging review detailed reports were submitted by all sub-committees and these were followed by an address from outgoing club chairman William Doogan. Reflecting on a very busy season, he thanked all those who had played a role in steering the club successfully through another hectic season on and off the pitch. William also reflected on his five years in the chair and made some thoughtful observations about developments in the club over that period and going forward. The Chairman's report and Lisa McTernan's Secretary's report can be viewed now on aodhruadh.org. Motions were then considered and decided upon, and it was heartening to see the level of debate and thought devoted to the consideration of these proposals. The AGM then proceeded to the election of officers with the following posts being filled. Patrons: Father Dunne and Canon McGroarty; President: Owen Roe O'Neill; Vice Presidents: Peter Conlon, PJ Buggy, John Magee, Michael McLoone and John Murphy; Chairwoman: Lisa McTernan; Vice-Chairman: Diarmaid Keon; Secretary: TBC; Assistant Secretary: TBC; Treasurer: Patricia Bradshaw; Assistant Treasurer: Sabrina Brosnan; PRO: John Hughes; Oifigeach na Gaeilge: Eamonn Martin Maguire; Substitute County Board Delegate: William Doogan; Health and Well-being Officer: Maura Gallagher; Child Protection Officer: Josephine McNulty. Coaching Officers: Packie McGrath and Liam Hassett. Park Committee appointments were as follows: Chariman: Tom Daly; Secretary John Larkin; Assistant Secretary: Philip McLoone; Treasurer: David McLoone; Assistant Treasurer: Patsy Kilgannon; PRO: Michael Daly; Assistant Chairman: Conal Gallagher. Many thanks to all the outgoing officers for their hard work, and congratulations and best wishes to all those who have taken up a post for 2024.

Donegal v Roscommon in the Park
Aodh Ruadh are proud to announce the return of inter-county football to Father Tierney Park on Sunday, 17th December. Donegal will be the hosts for a challenge game against Roscommon with a share of the proceeds from the game going to North West Hospice, an organisation which has given great service to people from across both counties. The last time Ballyshannon played host to the senior county side was on 1st March 2020 when Declan Bonner's men saw off Monaghan in the Division 1 of the National Football League on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-8. Indeed, the Erneside ground has generally proved a happy hunting ground for Donegal down the years and we hope that will continue in next month's challenge with the action getting under way at 1.30pm. Put it in your diary and spread the word as Jim McGuinness's Donegal mark two make their first inter-county outing.

Football
Aodh Ruadh played well in patches against Naomh Conaill on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough to clinch the result against a more consistent Glenties outfit. The visitors notched the first two points in Father Tierney Park before Jack Gallagher got his side off the mark in the fifth minute. Naomh Conaill responded immediately and added another in the ninth minute to keep them on the front foot. A nice move from Aodh Ruadh was well-finished by Cian Rooney, and a minute later it could have been honours even, but Jack Gallagher's audacious chip just went over the bar. Naomh Conaill reeled off three unanswered points in response, but just before half-time Jack Gallagher sent over a much needed free to keep Aodh Ruadh in contact with the Blue leading at the interval 0-8 to 0-4. Glenties quickly hit two points early in the second half to open up a two goal advantage. Ballyshannon hung in though and a hard-earned Cian Rooney free stemmed the flow somewhat. Matt Gillespie then hoisted over a fine effort in the 37th minute to leave four in it once again. Glenties got an answering point, but Senan Rooney sent in a superb ball for Cian Rooney to race out and collect. Rooney then danced past two tackles before placing a precision shot into the top left corner. He really is dynamite in those sorts of situations. There were two points in it now with 17 minutes left to play and the game was back in the melting pot. With ten left Cian Rooney split the posts with a beautiful effort to reduce the deficit to the minimum. Naomh Conaill responded with style though and four points in as many minutes swept the game back out of Aodh Ruadh's grasp. Jack Gallagher did get his side a late lifeline with a snapshot to the net after a rebounded effort, but time had run out for the Ernesiders. They will now take the scenic route through the championship quarter-finals. Ballyshannon showed in patches that they can rattle any team, and won't fear any side as they go into the knock out stages. The absence of Damian Weber was keenly felt on Sunday, with some good opportunities going a-begging. They will look for more of the same from Senan Rooney, who had a great impact around the middle against Glenties. Cian Rooney and Jack Gallagher also did really well on any ball that came their way. Further back Aaron Cullen kept a clean sheet and made some useful contributions out around the middle of the field too. The Aodh Ruadh team and scorers were as follows: Aaron Cullen, Mitchell McLaughlin, Kyle Murray, Aidan Sweeny; James Gallagher, Mark McGlynn, Senan Rooney, Colm McGloin, Matt Gillespie (0-1); Eoghan Kelly, Darragh Flood Dolan, Harry Howarth; Cian McKenna, Cian Rooney (1-3, 1f), Jack Gallagher (01-3, 1f). Subs: James Monaghan for Cian McKenna 37 minutes; James Ward for Harry Howarth 37 minutes. Head along to aodhruadh.org where we have a gallery of pictures from Sunday's game.

The curtain was drawn down on the Bord na nÓg season in spectacular style last Saturday with the return of the awards night to the Abbey Centre. There was a capacity crowd in the theatre to welcome guest of honour, county star Oisín Gallen, to Ballyshannon. Master of Ceremonies, Michael Daly, put Oisín through his paces with some interesting questions before the MacCumhaill's ace addressed the young players present with some inspirational observations drawn from his own long hard struggle to consistently competing at the highest levels of the game. After that it was on to the team presentations with Oisín presenting every member of Bord na nÓg in attendance with a medal to recognise their hard work and commitment over the course of 2023. The under 7, under 9 and under 11 squads were first up followed by the Bakery Cup teams. The team presentations then concluded with the under 15 team receiving their county Shield and League medals. The event then moved on to the individual awards. These were as follows: Under 11 Green Squad most improved player - Phelim Barron; Under 11 Green Squad player of the year - Donnacha Conlon; Under 11 White Squad most improved player - Daire Doogan; Under 11 White Squad player of the year - Freddie Knott; Under 13 Green Squad most improved player - Alex Kerrigan; Under 13 Green Squad player of the year - Jack Hassett; Under 13 White Squad most improved player - Harry McGowan; Under 13 White Squad player of the year - Senan Ward; Under 15 most improved player - Dáithí Sheerin; Under 15 player of the year - Gareth Brendan; Under 17 most improved player - James Ward; Under 17 player of the year - James Monaghan. With the presentations completed Michael Daly wrapped up proceedings by thanking all the parents and guardians for all their support over the course of the year and also thanked everyone who had helped make it such a well run and enjoyable evening. Head along to aodhruadh.org where we have a huge gallery of images from the evening live now.

Best of luck to Eoghan Kelly who will be lining out for Ulster University in the All-Ireland Freshers final against the University of Limerick on Wednesday, 6th December.

Ladies
Our under 13 girls travelled the long journey to Dunfanaghy on Saturday morning, to face Saint Michael’s in their Silver county semi-final. The weather was unusually calm and dry at the coastal venue, perfect conditions for the match which was expected to be a close affair. However, close it was not in the first half, as Aodh Ruadh made several unforced errors along with poor decision making. Saint Michael’s on the other hand were more clinical in front of goal, and were winning their 50 / 50 battles all over the pitch. Aodh Ruadh were perhaps fortunate to go in at half time only four points down, on a scoreline of 0-5 to 0-1. Whatever management said at half time, certainly helped turn the tide. If our girls had lost their 50 / 50s in the first half, they turned that stat on its head and began to battle bravely, with many taking heavy knocks, but getting up off the turf to go again. Niamh McGrath and Faye Gillespie began to dominate at midfield, and with Jenna Britton now in a free role, she attacked at will. Our girls began to chip away at the homesters’ lead, closing the gap to one point midway through the second half. The turning point came with ten minutes remaining, when a poorly executed clearance from Saint Michael’s fell to Leia Roper 13 metres out, and she picked her spot in the top corner of the net for a great goal to put her side into the lead for the first time. A further Aodh Ruadh point put the Ernesiders a goal ahead, but Saint Michael’s were not finished yet, and put over two points in the dying minutes. Extra time looked likely as the hosts had a late free to equalise, but the dead ball effort went the wrong side of the post, and the referee’s whistle sounded to complete a brilliant come back which demonstrated this team's resilience and improvement over the course of the season. They now qualify for the Silver county final, which is due to be played this Saturday against Saint Mary’s, Convoy. Venue and time to be confirmed in due course. Keep an eye on the club's social media channels for updates.

Hurling
The underage awards season wraps up on Saturday 9th December when the Juvenile Hurlers host their awards night in Dorrian's Imperial Hotel. The action gets underway at 6pm, and with plenty of silverware to be presented it promises to be a real night for our young hurlers to remember.

Christmas quizzing

There will be loads of prizes to be won, even if you can't make it on the night.
